The morning coat is the formal dress a butler wears for daytime occasions. The black coat is worn with a grey waistcoat, striped trousers, a white dress shirt, a tie, black leather shoes and white gloves. At Queen's Butler, gentleman and lady butlers alike dress in the same livery to serve you.
The black tails quietly draw the line of the back
Day formal dress is the attire composed to receive the master or lady for the occasions of morning and afternoon. When a butler slips into the sleeves of a morning coat and settles collar and shoulders, the long tails at the back draw the standing figure upwards. The front sits neat and composed; when the butler steps forward, the tails move a little. That outline is bound up with the work of a butler moving through the Manor by day.
A welcome at the entrance, a moment receiving a letter in the study, a place beside the dining table. The butler puts each piece in order not to display the attire, but to support your day without disturbing it. Our lady and gentleman butlers wait quietly at your side in the same day formal dress.
When moving ahead to the door, the butler paces the step so that the tails never brush a chair or a piece of furniture. In a bow, the weight is placed so that not only the back but the line of the coat holds. Dressing, for a butler, is not fitting the body to the shape of the clothes, but keeping formal dress intact through the movements that duty requires.
What makes up the full morning coat

A butler serving in the Manor sets every detail in order first
Dressing is not merely putting on clothes in order, but composing a single figure able to move before you. The butler checks that the collar follows the neck, that the waistcoat sits straight, and that the cuffs show evenly on both sides. Surveying the whole from coat to shoes to white gloves, no great disarray is left at front, side or back.
Against the black cloth, the white shirt and gloves show the movement of the hands clearly. Laying a hand to the door or steadying a silver pot, the butler's gestures are never separate from the clothes. That quiet contrast conveys the attentiveness turned towards you.
Even after receiving the master or lady, the butler checks cuffs, tie, hem and leather shoes between duties: after drawing a chair, before moving to another room, on returning to the Manor from outside. The butler sets the collar and cuffs of the white dress shirt in order and aligns the line of the striped trousers to the front.
Tie and waistcoat
The butler centres the knot of the tie and makes sure the grey waistcoat wraps the shirt neatly.
Coat and shoes
The butler settles the shoulders and tails of the coat and checks the whole as a single line down to the black leather shoes.
Front and back
Beyond the collar, chest and cuffs, the butler checks that the long tails fall straight behind.
Down to the white gloves
The butler fits the white gloves to the fingertips, readying the hands that handle silver and porcelain.
Reading the full set from the front, the side and the back
From the front, the grey waistcoat and white dress shirt are layered inside the black coat. From the side, the cuffs appear when the arms hang down, and the tails move as the butler walks. From the back, one can check that the long tails fall straight from the centre of the spine. A butler never composes one side alone.
The front that receives you, the profile that moves ahead to the door, the back seen once you have been shown in. The lines of the set are joined so that from whichever side, the butler is seen in the midst of duty.
