White Gloves

White gloves prepare the hands that reach for the furnishings

When laying silver cutlery or steadying a porcelain cup, the butler's hands are gloved in white. Beyond the black cuff, the white makes each movement clear, quietly telling you where the hand is placed.

The butler checks that the fingertips are properly seated and that nothing is out of order between glove and cuff. Lady and gentleman butlers alike take the same care with their hands when handling silver and porcelain. White gloves are not merely an ornament of the costume, but a tool bound to the moment of service.

Before Service

Inspect the leather

The butler checks each black shoe in turn, left and right, for any visible blemish.

Settle the laces and vamp

The butler sees that the closed lacing sits evenly and rests quietly on the vamp, without pulling to either side.

Stand and check the direction

With both feet placed, the butler checks that the toes point naturally and sets the foundation of the standing figure.

Put on the white gloves

The butler draws the gloves fully over fingertips and wrist and checks how they meet the black cuff.

Move the fingers

The butler confirms that the fingertips sit well, so that the gloved hand can reach the furnishings without strain.

From Floor to Table

From floor to table, both ends of the butler's movement are set

As the butler moves from the door to the table, the black shoes carry the stride and mark where to stop. The closed lacing rests on the vamp; the single line across the toe faces forward. Once the feet are set, the body too turns squarely towards you.

At the table, the eye moves to the white-gloved hands: laying the silver, steadying the porcelain, quietly offering what is needed. With white hands at the end of black sleeves, you can see where the butler touches and what is being moved.

One Ensemble

Two pieces far apart become one standing figure

Shoes and white gloves are the pair that supports the butler's movements at either end of the body. When bowing at the door, the butler sets the direction and position of both feet before moving the upper body. With polished black shoes holding the floor, the beginning and end of the bow do not waver. On raising the head, the butler aligns body and toes towards the direction in which you are to be led.

In the gallery, footsteps are kept from sounding more than necessary, and the butler moves while watching your pace. Stopping once before the door, setting the feet, then placing a hand upon it, the movement of walking and the movement of the hands become one flow. On rainy days, the butler checks for wet and disorder after entering the Manor and sets the feet right before coming before you.

The meaning of the white gloves lies in preparing the hands that reach for silver and porcelain, and in making each movement clear beyond the black sleeve. The butler does not rest content merely for having put them on, but checks that no fingertip is loose and that the wrist sits within the cuff. When handling the Christofle Marly silver, the butler selects the one piece needed and lifts it quietly with white fingertips.
