About The Buddy

A Buddy is the name Queen's Butler uses for a personal butler who attends the same guest many times, coming to know their preferences, their pace, and the rhythm of conversation and silence. It is distinguished from a butler who attends for a single day and from a one-off request for a particular butler.

IThe culture of the personal butler

The history of the butler includes a culture of continuous service to one master or one household. Living within the same routine, the butler knew the schedule, the preferences, the visitors and where each thing was kept, and could prepare the next thing without asking from the beginning each time. Being personal meant not merely that the same person appeared, but that memory accumulated over time became part of the work.

That relationship was never a matter of accepting every word of the master without question. The butler kept to the bounds of the role, made clear what could and could not be done, and held a long trust in keeping. It is because both closeness and courtesy were present that the personal relationship endured.

Memory becomes the next preparation

Where you left off, the place you liked, what you would rather avoid. A personal butler turns time spent together into the next act of service.

II'Buddy' is a name unique to Queen's Butler

The idea of a personal butler is not unique to this manor. 'Buddy', however, is the name Queen's Butler has chosen to describe the personal relationship. It is not used as a general title for the profession or as a historical rank.

Borrowing the sense of companionship in the English word 'buddy', it nevertheless keeps the courtesy of a butler rather than collapsing into the distance of friendship. Like a part of your own body, moving naturally when needed and confirming your intention before it is spoken: that closeness is what Queen's Butler calls a Buddy.

Neither leaning on familiarity alone, nor kept distant by the courtesy of service alone. The relationship between the two is entrusted to a single word.

IIIDifferent from a request for a single day

Asking, on a single booking, 'I would like the butler from last time', is not the same as the Buddy relationship. A request received for that day does not guarantee that the same butler can attend. A Buddy is a butler named as your personal butler within the membership, attending you again and again.

The difference shows less in the title than in the accumulation of time. At first we ask how strong you take your tea; next time we remember. The book you were reading is placed where you will sit; on a day you would rather not talk, the silence is respected. However well the butler comes to understand you, they never presume, and keep the confirmations that matter.

IVCloseness lies between anticipation and confirmation

The closer the relationship, the more it may seem that a fine butler acts without asking anything. Yet preferences change, and what pleased you yesterday may disturb today's quiet. A Buddy uses memory, but never decides who you are from memory alone.

Reading your expression before reaching for the blanket. Showing you to your usual seat while leaving another open. Anticipation lightens the burden; confirmation protects your freedom. Keeping both is the duty that stops a closeness like a part of your own body from becoming an imposition.

Remembering, without presuming

What a Buddy keeps is not only your past preferences, but the room for today's you to choose again.

VMale butlers and female butlers alike

Both male and female butlers are in residence at Queen's Butler. When considering a Buddy, we can note a preference for gender or age, but at the heart of a growing relationship is compatibility with one butler as an individual: the tone of voice, the length of stride, particular strengths, the way silence is placed.

There is no need to decide by title from the outset. Over several visits to the manor you come to know how easily you talk, the distance at which they wait, the way they handle objects. The feeling of 'this butler' often takes shape through time spent together, rather than by choosing from a list.

The same courtesy, yet different voices, strides and strengths. Compatibility is something to confirm by meeting in person.

VIThe relationship grows at the Salon

The place where you meet a Buddy is the Salon in Odaiba. First you visit the manor as a visitor and spend time with the butler attending that day. Having encountered their voice, their bearing and the distance at which they wait, and confirmed your compatibility, you may consider naming them as your personal butler through the membership.

The precise arrangements for a Buddy, the membership tiers and the conditions for naming one are explained in detail under 'The Buddy and Membership' at the Salon. This page unravels the culture and the name; it is not a page setting out booking conditions or benefits.

VIIBeyond the manor, a separate butler contract

The Salon centres on time spent in attendance within the manor in Odaiba. Should you wish a Buddy you have grown fond of to continue attending you beyond the manor, at home for instance, this is not an extension of the Salon but a separate butler contract, which we discuss on request.

The butlers able to enter into such a contract are few. As the terms and remuneration cannot be set out uniformly, we confirm them individually on enquiry. However much the name Buddy speaks of closeness, we never blur the scope of the contract, the dignity of the butler or the agreement of both parties.

Meeting at the manor, building memory, and proceeding to a separate contract if needed: by keeping each stage distinct, a Buddy becomes not a matter of words but a relationship that grows through time and trust.

VIIIA Buddy's memory never narrows your freedom

A Buddy's memory is not a record for repeating last time's answer, but a foundation that lightens the burden of being asked what you wish today. Remembering your usual seat, we still mention that another room is open to you first. Remembering the tea you favoured, we consider that today may call for something else.

The same is true of remembering where a conversation left off. On a day you would rather not, it is not raised; it is held in reserve so that we can respond when you wish to continue. Not forgetting, and not imposing. To keep both at once, a Buddy reads your expression and the pauses, and chooses the words of confirmation.

Remembering, so that you may choose again

Rather than fixing past preferences as the answer, they become choices offered to today's you.

IXAttending you alone, and with those dear to you

On a day you visit the manor alone, a Buddy makes no attempt to fill the silence. Watching your eyes on a book, your posture loosening before the fire, your hand reaching for the silver bell, they separate what can be prepared before being called from what should wait until they are.

On a day spent with two or more, it matters that a Buddy does not bring forward their familiarity with one guest alone. They explain the flow clearly to those visiting the manor for the first time and watch that no one drifts from the circle of conversation.

XChoosing a Buddy is a matter of compatibility over time, more than of bearing

Compatibility is not decided by a single brilliant moment. Whether the voice at the door pleases you, whether the stride matches yours, whether silence is never hurried, whether the way your wishes are confirmed is easy to follow. The time actually spent in the manor holds the clues to a relationship of long service.

Butlers have their strengths and weaknesses. One is gifted in telling the origins of the furnishings; one prefers to guard a quiet hour of reading; one is attentive to a room of several guests. Alongside any wish for a man or a woman, or for a particular age, tell us the distance at which you would like to spend your time.

To choose a Buddy is not to possess someone. It is to choose a relationship of repeated service, in which the dignity of both is protected.

What the closeness of a Buddy includes

  • Remembering preferences and unfinished conversations, and bringing them to the next visit
  • Anticipating while confirming the wishes of the day
  • Confirming compatibility with one butler, male or female, over time
  • Attending you again and again as your personal butler under the conditions of the membership

What a Buddy does not include

  • A personal relationship guaranteed by a single request
  • Deciding how you feel from memory alone
  • Use of the manor turning automatically into a butler contract beyond it
  • Accepting requests beyond the scope of the contract or the dignity of the butler
QIs 'Buddy' a historical title for a butler?
A

No. Against the background of the culture of the personal butler, it is the name Queen's Butler uses for the personal relationship. It is neither a general job title nor a rank.

QIf I ask for the same butler once, do they become my Buddy?
A

No. A request for the day is distinguished from a Buddy named as your personal butler within the membership. A wish alone is no guarantee.

QCan a female butler be my Buddy?
A

Both male and female butlers are in residence. We note your wishes, but please check availability and the conditions for naming a butler, and confirm your compatibility by meeting in person.

QWill a Buddy attend me beyond the manor?
A

Continued service beyond the manor requires a butler contract separate from the Salon. The butlers able to enter into such a contract are few. Terms and remuneration are confirmed individually.

QDoes a Buddy prepare my previous preferences exactly as before each time?
A

Memory informs the preparation, but we never assume today's wishes are the same. Previous preferences are set out as choices, and the day's mood is confirmed before we act.

QDo I need to decide on a Buddy on my first visit?
A

No. First, come to know the voices, bearing, strides and waiting distances of the butlers at the manor. Over time you learn your compatibility, and having checked the conditions of the membership, you may consider a personal relationship.
